I’m a 40 year old, strong Vietnamese woman, born in Honolulu, HI and raised in San Jose, CA. In the 2nd grade, I was pulled out of class one day and told that I would be attending a “special” class a few days a week. The “special class” was ESL. The teachers put me in a box and assumed English was a second language to me. Eventually, they realized English was not my second language and pulled me out of the class. I was too young to realize I was being stereotyped. This realization didn’t surface until last summer during the BLM movement that made me really dig deep and think about my racial experience growing up.
